The History of WOMAN WOMAN was conceived in the spring of 1995 to fill a personal need which Judith Abraham felt was lacking in our community. To some extent, she felt that seasoned women were being taken for granted, that they needed an “atta girl” for things well-deserved. Judith says “People seemed to think that we always had it together because we made it to whatever age we are.” That not always being the case, Judith thought it prudent and enterprising to start looking for women over 50 who agreed with her philosophy. There are many good, professional and strong women’s groups in the Triad. However, none were targeted specifically for the seasoned, career woman. Judith wanted to form a group for these women who still wanted to grow, mentor, find their own hidden talents and support others who wanted the same goals. “Our needs and agendas can oftentimes be different from say a 30-year old’s.” Judith states. Originally intended for women over 50, many of the women approached with this idea were in their mid-40’s. There was just too much interest shown to exclude this age group. A diverse Executive Board was formed with the task of each compiling a list of potential members. Invitations were mailed to about 300 women in the community. The first meeting had 80 women, 33 of whom joined that evening. Today, WOMAN (Women Over-40 Meeting And Networking) has more than 100 members. Judith proudly states “Our birthing pains are now becoming our growing pains. We have arrived!” |
